Intense Heatwave sweeps Oman

MUSCAT: Saham and Al Batinah Plains experienced scorching temperatures of 46 degrees Celsius and 47 degrees Celsius respectively, as a relentless heatwave sweeps through Oman.

Authorities have issued warnings about sunstroke and heat exhaustion, advising the public to avoid direct sunlight at noon.

High temperatures forecasts were already on alert for the areas overlooking the coasts of the Sea of Oman and the desert areas, ranging between the middle and end of the forties during the next two days. The weather forecaster at the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre said, “During the month of June one will experience the temperature going higher progressively as May and June are transitional months.”

Tropical cyclones are yet another feature of the transitional months.

Initial indicators on the developments in the Arabian Sea show chances of a tropical state to form in the southeast of the Arabian Sea during the middle of next week.

However, the Met Office clearly stated that “There is still a discrepancy on the location, time and direction of the situation (if it is formed), and there is no effect on the atmosphere of the Sultanate of Oman during the next five days.”

Specialists at the National Centre are following up on all updates and developments in the Arabian Sea on an ongoing basis.

June is usually a month that sees extensive activity of seasonal thunderstorms in the Arabian Sea. However, the weather forecaster said it is too early to say about the situation.

“Sometimes it might just die off after being a tropical storm. Some years have seen just one whereas other occasions have seen multiple storms,” he said.
