OFA in talks with US Soccer for friendly in Sept

 
MUSCAT: The Oman Football Association (OFA) is in a close follow-up with US Soccer to arrange a friendly match against USA team in September. The discussions are still going on between both parties to finalise the possibility of holding a preparatory international match which is planned to take place in USA in September. The USA team is the 13th world placed team as per Fifa world ranking for April 2023.

The Red Warriors will have their main assignment in January 2024 as they will take part in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 finals. Oman were drawn in Group F along with Asian favourites Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Kyrgyzstan. Moreover, the national team will compete in the first edition of the Central Asian Football Association (Cafa) Nations Cup 2023 in Uzbekistan during June 10 to 20. Oman are grouped with hosts Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in Group A while Iran, Kyrgyzstan (hosts) and Afghanistan teams comprised Group B.

The Oman national team, coached by Croatian Branko Ivankovic, will hold series of domestic and overseas camps during the forthcoming period to shape up the squad for the top continental championship and the Cafa event.

On Thursday, Ivankovic announced the list of 24 players who will take part in the planned domestic camp which will begin on Monday and will conclude on June 8. The announced squad featured return of 2022-23 Omantel League top-scorer Mohsin al Ghassani who was away from the national team for many months.

The list comprised a new junior face represented by Muscat club’s goalkeeper Mazin Saleh who will train with Ibrahim al Mukhaini, Fayez al Rushaidi and Ahmed al Rawahi. The majority of the players for the upcoming camp were selected from OL champions Al Nahdha, runners-up Al Suwaiq and Seeb among other clubs.
