Omani fencers clinch 16 medals at West Asian event

Oman national teams emerged champions in the West Asian Fencing Championship for age groups in Jordan’s Al Hussein Youth City from May 4 to 7.

Omani boys and girls won 16 medals competing with 240 players, representing 8 countries, namely, Oman, the UAE, Palestine, Lebanon, Bahrain, Syria, Qatar and Jordan.

The organisers Jordan Fencing Association had set 39 medals to be claimed in three days of competition in three categories of epee, foil and sabre, for individual and group events.

In the epee team event, the concluding competition of the tournament, Oman boys under-15 team won first place and the gold medal.

Lebanon claimed second place and hosts Jordan finished third.

The Omani girls under-15 team also won the gold in epee event. Jordan fencers swept the second and third places.

The Omani under-15 girls team dominated the foil section to claim the gold. Jordan won the second and third places.

Oman came on top in under-13 boys epee section to take the gold medal. Syria took the silver, while Lebanon claimed the bronze.



INDIVIDUAL MEDALS

Omani fencers also claimed the honours in the individual section.

In the individual foil competition for girls under 11 years, Oman’s Jude bint Abdul Karim al Balushi snatched the gold medal.

In the individual foil competition for boys under 13 years, Oman’s Ali bin Hamad al Busaidy won the gold medal, while teammate Ammar bin Mohammed al Azizi won the bronze medal.

In the individual epee competition for girls under 13 years, Oman’s Jana bint Mohammed al Sharjiyah was ranked first to take the gold medal and teammate Salma bint Said al Deghaishiyah claimed the silver medal.
