MUSCAT: The National Survey Authority (NSA) at the Ministry of Defence has obtained a mobile mapping system, which will enable it to effectively provide geospatial data for public and private entities.

The mobile mapping system is a vehicle-mounted multi-component device equipped with a radar or laser and remote sensors.

The unit takes pictures at a 360-degree angle and assembles laser/cloud points of coordinates and height information at a high density of up to two million points per second by using a laser scanner.

At the same time, the device monitors GNSS data to obtain a centimetre-accurate location. The primary outputs from these systems include GIS data, digital maps, geo-referenced images, and cloud points.

The system provides the NSA with a rapid mechanism for capturing data with high accuracy.

Besides, it can be used in many applications related to 3-D city modelling, asset management, situation assessment, land use, detailed and topographic surveying, volume calculations, disaster management, construction control, housing and infrastructure mapping, mine surveying, among others.
