The Spanish head coach of Oman Under-19 football team, David Gordo, is likely to discontinue from his position as head of the technical coaching staff, according to some sources. The Spanish coach had signed a contract with Oman Football Association (OFA) in February 2022 to lead the U19 football team for a deal of two years contract.

In main highlights of Gordo’s career with junior Red Warriors, the Spanish coach managed to advance Oman to 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan finals. The national team boys ended their qualifying campaign topping their group by six points from two victories against the Philippines and Thailand and suffered a loss against Afghanistan 1-0. They scored four goals and conceded one during the qualifiers which was hosted at Al Saada Sports Complex in Salalah in September 2022.

The expectations were very high for Oman team to deliver a top show in their third participation after 2014 and 2000 editions in Asian AFC Under-20 finals in Uzbekistan in last March. The team went under well-organised and intensive preparatory programme which featured series of internal and external camps in Turkey with several friendly matches. Oman team campaign in the AFC Under-20 Asian Cup 2023 which was held in Uzbekistan ended with only one point from a goalless draw against Jordan. Oman had suffered two defeats in the first two games of the group against South Korea and Tajikistan.

Oman U19 team also took part in Arab Cup in last July. Oman was drawn in a group featuring Egypt and Somalia. The first game finished with a win for Egypt 1-0 and then Oman boys registered a 2-1 victory over Somalia.

Coach Gordo affirmed in a previous interview with Oman Observer that his focus is to help junior players to become great footballers in the future. Also, he said that his direction to coaching staff was to form a competitive and balanced squad for Oman team.
