Rehabilitation work begins at Qurum beach

As the Sultanate of Oman and its vast coastline are frequently exposed to the impacts of air troughs and low-pressure weather systems, the authorities have decided to launch corrective measures.

The development of Qurum beach, which was the need of the hour for the local beachgoers as some of the popular waterfront destinations, had been lost to various development projects.

As a result, the Muscat Municipality is implementing a project to protect the slopes at Al Qurum Beach - Al Sarooj, covering a length of 1,400 metres, using metal panels, reinforced concrete, and gravel lined with cement.

The project, which includes the construction of a walkway with a width of 1.5 metres along the protections, is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

"In old times, Qantab beach was a popular evening destination but we lost it to development and now Yiti beach is also a no-go due to an upcoming tourism project in the area. While other beaches are far away from the city, spending time at Qurum beach has become difficult of late due to rising water levels, especially during high tidal waves," Mike Philips, a regular visitor to the area for a morning walk.

In recent times, Qurum beach has been facing the wrath of rising water levels and subsequent soil erosion, making it difficult for beach lovers to spend some time there in the evening with families.

Al Qurum Beach, also known as Shati Al Qurum, is among the best beaches in Muscat and a good choice for evening outings as it is in the heart of the city. The 4 km-long beach is also popular with morning and evening joggers and for get-togethers at night as temperatures drop.
