Oman national football team will take part in the first ever Central Asian Football Association (Cafa) Nations Cup 2023 which will be held during June 10-20.

Seven teams confirmed their participation in the Central Asian tournament including Asian heavyweights Iran, Oman, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and hosts Tajikistan. The official draw of the tournament will take place on Wednesday in Dushanbe city, Tajikistan.

The preparatory international tournament will be played during the Fifa days as part of the team’s preparation for the forthcoming assignments including the 2024 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar and the AFC Asian qualifiers for World Cup in 2026 and AFC Asian Cup in 2027.

The teams in Cafa Nations Cup 2023 will be distributed into two groups as the first group will feature four teams and the second group will include three teams. The toppers from each group will vie for the tournament title while the second-placed teams in both groups will compete in the third and fourth play-off.

It is expected that the forthcoming camp of the national team will be after the completion of the top-tier league on May 15 to gear up for the Central Asian tournament.

The 'Red Warriors’ last appearance was in March during the domestic preparatory camp in Muscat and lasted for almost 10 days under the watchful eyes of Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic. The camp featured an international friendly game against Lebanon on March 27 which Oman won 2-0. Al Suwaiq striker Essam al Subhi had netted the winning goals in the 27th minute and 80th minutes of the game.

The national team was supposed to compete in the 10th edition of the West Asian Championship, which was postponed by host country United Arab Emirates on February 7. The new dates of the event have not been declared yet by the West Asian Federation.
