Plans afoot to revitalise area around Port Sultan Qaboos

Muscat: The government seeks to revitalise commercial activities at the iconic Port Sultan Qaboos in Muttrah with bids being awarded for some activities at the port such as the operations of the luxury yachts and the repairing of ships.
Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, recently said commercial activities were moved to Suhar from Muscat considering the traffic congestion at Muttrah and the fact that the new port was new and advanced. "Some bids were awarded for some activities at the port such as the operations of the luxury yachts and the repairing of ships among others," he said.
Meanwhile, Omran Group is soon expected to unveil details of the tourism projects alongside the Muttrah Waterfront. It may be noted that Muttrah is a port of call for tourist ships receiving thousands of foreign visitors between November and April every year.
Muttrah Tourism Development Company (MTDC) established to redevelop Port Sultan Qaboos into a mixed-use tourism and residential community was restructured in 2020 with full ownership transferred to Omran.
Meanwhile, Muscat Municipality has invited bids for the Muttrah Square project as per the design that won the first Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design.
Designed by Ahmed bin Mohammed al Ghadhami, Omaima bint Mahmoud al Hinaiyah, and Abdullah bin Saleh at Bahri, the project is expected to raise the value of Muttrah with a unique landmark, where an iconic bridge in the middle of the square is designed in the form of a bird over the sea.
The bridge captures the famous landmarks of Muttrah in one frame and will be surrounded by a mixed-use plaza that includes a dancing fountain, retail stores, and cafes, with lights that blend with the waves of the sea.
The authorities are working on launching a cable car service between the vegetable and fish market and Kalbou Park.
