'Musandam Winter' campaign to boost tourism in governorate

 
MUSCAT: According to Omar bin Ali al Shuhi, history researcher, Musandam Governorate owes its name to the Cape of Musandam, an island on the Sea of Oman adjoining Kamzar maritime village. The island is but a hilltop in the middle of the sea surrounded by rock islands the most prominent of which is Salama Island.

The Sultanate of Oman’s attention to wildlife and maritime life has been manifested in the issuance of Royal Decree No (54/2022) which established the National Natural Park Reserve in the Governorate of Musandam. The governorate comprises 23 islands, 13 of which are quite large.

'The most important among them is the Telegraph Island locally known as Maqlab Island. It is home to the first modern communications cable in the Arabian Gulf, The submarine cable stretches from the city of Mumbai in India and the city of Basra in Iraq. The island of Maqlab is home to the transmit station,' Al Shuhi said.

Musandam Island is the largest island in Musandam Governorate, second only to Aum Al Ghanam Island. Musandam Island, overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, is among the most stunning places in Oman. It boasts significant historic landmarks such as Ras al Bab. The island boasts scenic views, emerald beaches and beautiful plains that attract tourists seeking to enjoy mountain hiking and long-distance trekking.

Seebi Island, located in the Wilayat of Khasab in Khor Sham, is one of the most eye-catching tourist attractions of Musandam Governorate. With a beautiful sandy crescent-shaped beach, the island is a good place for kayaking.

Developing tourist islands of the Musandam Governorate provides amble investment opportunities with excellent revenues that can be exploited by the private sector as the country is witnessing a renewed renaissance in tourism industry spearheaded by the the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the Office of the Governor of Musandam with the aim of upgrading tourism, developing local tourism facilities and diversifying entertainment products to meet the needs of visitors.

The Office of the Governor of Musandam launched a tourism promotional campaign under the slogan 'Musandam Winter' and is working to create a tourism hub by tapping the governorate’s tourism potentials such as the unique nature and cultural richness through various events, activities and programmes that witnessed a big tourist turnout since its launch.

The islands of Musandam Governorate allow visitors an opportunity to spend unforgettable time on its golden sands, pristine beaches and beautiful rocks. Tourists can also explore rare plants and birds and marine life available only on the islands of Musandam Governorate. Tourists can enjoy deep diving into the sea to explore the sea and learn about its contents. The archaeological sites are yet another tourism treat that shed light on their culture, history and ancient heritage of Musandam.
