Efforts to combat insect pests in Dhofar continue

SALALAH: The Environment Authority, represented by the Directorate-General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, continues its efforts to fight insect pests with the aim of conserving and sustaining vegetation in the mountains of Dhofar.
In this context, the Environment Authority carried out a series of campaigns to combat insect pests in the mountains of Dhofar as part of its programmes aimed at protecting perennial trees.
Said bin Mohammed al Shuhri, Head of Department of Biodiversity in the Wilayat of Mirbat, said that the campaigns against insect pests began in the Hashir area in the Wilayat of Mirbat in 2021. He added that the control methodology is based on a number of remedial and preventive steps for perennial trees especially fig trees.
The most common insect pests targeted by the campaigns are the bark beetles. Pets fighters tend to cut off dead branches of infested trees and manually clean and spray the trees with pesticides that are harmless to plants before applying calcareous substances on the tree trunks to protect them from the infiltration of insect larvae, the official said. He explained that the campaign for combating insect pests targets some 1,100 trees during the first half of this year in various regions of Dhofar Governorate. — ONA
