New rules on food fortification from March 17

 
Muscat: The Ministry of Agricultural and Fisheries and Water Resources's 185/2022 on Food Fortification will come into effect on March 17.

According to Food Safety & Quality Center, the penalty for violating the decision is RO1,000 and doubled in case of repetition.

The decision states that the new regulations will cover any substance that is usually consumed as a food component, with the aim of providing the body with energy, and compensating for the deficiency in a biochemical substance that the body does not produce in sufficient quantities, and needs it for growth, formation and retaining a healthy life.

Reinforcement: Adding one or more nutrients to food to improve the nutritional value of the product, and protect society from the symptoms resulting due to the lack of nutrients.

It is prohibited to produce, import, and market any food product that violates the provisions of these regulations, and this does not include export products.

Based on the requirements of the Omani or the unified Gulf standards, the requirements of the nutritional data on the explanatory data card, the name of the source of the support material, and the added amount of it must be made written in the product explanatory data card.

The source of the reinforcement material used in production should be of food degree.

As per the Omani Standard or Unified Gulf specifications related to food packaging, the packages used in foodstuffs must be made of suitable materials that do not interact with the support material.
