Two more contractors held over collapsed buildings in Türkiye

ISTANBUL: Two more contractors have been arrested in Türkiye on suspicion of negligence related to collapsed buildings following Monday’s devastating earthquake, media reported on Sunday.

A contractor who was allegedly responsible for managing the construction of several collapsed buildings in the south-eastern city of Adiyaman was arrested with his wife at Istanbul airport, the DHA news agency reported.

The two were reportedly trying to flee to Georgia with a large amount of cash.

Türkish prosecutors are now investigating more than 130 people allegedly responsible for the collapse of buildings, according to official reports. Arrest warrants have already been issued for more than 100 people.

Opposition politicians have said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shares responsibility for the disaster and accuse him of having failed to prepare the country for such a quake during his 20 years in power.

UN aid chief: We failed people in north-west Syria

CAIRO: The United Nations’ top humanitarian relief official, Martin Griffiths, admitted the UN had failed to provide help to people in Syria’s opposition-controlled region since Monday’s devastating earthquake.

“We have so far failed the people in north-west Syria. They rightly feel abandoned. Looking for international help that hasn’t arrived,”Griffiths said in a tweet.

“My duty and our obligation is to correct this failure as fast as we can. That’s my focus now,” he added during a visit to the border area.

Families of the victims in the town of Jindires, Idlib province, hoisted the UN flag upside down over buildings destroyed by earthquakes to condemn a lack of help from the organisation, according to opposition activist Osama Abo Zayd.

Greece, Türkiye urge better ties

ANTAKYA: Greece’s foreign minister visited Türkiye on Sunday in a show of support after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake last Monday, despite a longstanding rivalry between the two Nato countries.

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias was met with a warm embrace by his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, according to footage on state-run ERT TV, before they boarded helicopters to quake-hit regions.

His arrival marks the first visit by a European minister to Türkiye since the earthquake.
