Public Prosecution to discuss legal stand and crime

The Public Prosecution Department will hold its annual conference on Tuesday at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC). This year’s conference is themed “In the name of society”.
The event covers a spectrum of topics, namely reviewing indicators and statistics of cases in 2022, top goals that have been achieved and future plans.
The Public Prosecution Department accords great importance to its annual conference, stemming from its belief in the principles of transparency, society’s right to obtain information from official sources.
In a statement issued in 2022, the Central Bank of Oman has identified that financial crimes using online platforms multiplied several times in 2021 due to increased digital transactions and excessive use of online platforms for various purposes.
In its financial report issued last year, it is shown that a whopping 40.6 per cent growth has been reported in online transactions in 2021 alone against a 19.2 per cent growth rate in 2020, thanks to the ever-increasing usage of smartphones and newer applications aiding better, hassle-free living.
In 2020, bounced cheques constituted a major crime, with 7,143 cases registered with the Public Prosecution in 2021 against 4,949 crimes in 2020.
It further said that there had been an 18.3 per cent jump in the number of crimes committed in 2021, compared to that in 2020 when Covid-19 was at its peak, and a total of 28,201 crimes were reported in the country in 2021 against 23,831 in 2020. But in 2019, the total number of crimes was 28,920, a fall of 5,089 cases (18 per cent) from the previous year.
Additionally, crimes involving information technology and electronic transactions were next to bounced cheque cases, and the total number of cases was 2,894.
There were 73 cases of indecent assault and 11 cases of rape in 2021. Also, 33 cases of abuse of public funds by officials, 26 cases of the crimes of misusing the position, 120 cases of nepotism, and 9 cases of intentional breach of duty.
