TIRE: The cinema and architecture symposium was launched last week at the Youth Preparation Centre of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth in the Wilayat of Sur as part of the Al Sharqiyah International Film Festival. Local and the complementary role between cinema and architecture through ancient buildings such as castles and forts were discussed.
The symposium also presented the experience of the Lebanese cinema in caring for the artistic installations presented by the Lebanese director and actor Kassem Istanbuli by working on restoring ‘Ampire’ theatres in Tripoli, Lebanon, and restoring the cultural and artistic activities.
The first day of the festival saw screening of 21 short films as part of the festival’s narrative and documentary competition themes and Omani architecture at the Sur Plaza Hotel.
On the sidelines of the festival, the Saudi cinema experience in producing feature films and marketing them to global platforms was reviewed through the film ‘Forty Years and One Nights’ directed by Muhammad Hillel.
Director Adnan Belais presented a workshop on writing the script for the short narrative film, in which he dealt with how to obtain and write cinematic ideas, method of writing the script, and the stages of the short film before and after implementation. The dialogue session with Kuwaiti artist Saad al Faraj received wide interest from the audience stressing the importance of the presence of artists in social media.
The festival organised a dialogue session with the Jordanian artist, Suhair Fahd, who talked about her artistic activity and her interest in cinema and TV and their role through the works in which the artist starred, such as the children’s series ‘Captain Majid’, in which she played the character Majed.
About her views on Omani films, she said: “I am very happy with the abundance of Omani films. When I participated in my film in the Muscat Festival in 2018, I loved the beautiful mixture of stories of personal life, family life, and heritage in the city. The efforts of those working in the cinema sector must be strengthened by focusing on social life in order to get acquainted with. The world is proud about the ancient Omani treasures, beauty of nature and the terrain that qualifies it to be a global destination for film-makers, trying to create narrative and documentary stories. I hope that Omani films will be translated into several languages, including English and French, and that the films will not only be shown in festivals, but broadcast on electronic platforms to reach out to more viewers.”
The activities accompanying Al Sharqiyah International Film Festival continued, as the guests embarked on a tour to Khor Al Battah and Ras Al Jinz Reserve on Friday, to get acquainted with some of the tourist attractions in Sur.
The festival will also complete screenings of short films competing for awards, in addition to organising a cinematography workshop by director Jean al Balushi, which will focus on the stages of film implementation, types of shots and angle, lighting distribution, and the implementation of a representative scene (practical application).
