Strong quake rattles northern California

A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of northern California rocked people awake, damaged a bridge, caused gas leaks and left thousands without power. The earthquake struck at 2:34 am local time and was about 16.1 km deep, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
It struck about 12 km west-southwest of Ferndale, California, a Humboldt County town that is home to about 15,000 people. Local media and others on social media reported numerous gas leaks, downed powerlines and at least one structure fire in Ferndale.
