World Cup final live: Argentina wins on penalties

Muscat: Argentina beat 4-2 France on penalties in a remarkable final that saw several twists from the start.

Argentina 3-3 France - Messi and Di Maria goals before two in two minutes from Mbappe; Messi scores in extra time but Mbappe levels the spot.

Argentina led by two goals in the first half of the final match against France, who made a comeback to the game with two quick goals.

The World Cup trophy arrived at the Lusail Stadium in a specially commissioned Louis Vuitton trunk, escorted by Indian actor Deepika Padukone and a member of France’s 1998 or 2018 World Cup-winning teams.

The FIFA World Cup trophy travel case is designed to protect and transport the FIFA World Cup trophy, which weighs 6.175 kg and is made of 18-carat gold and malachite.

Padukone was appointed as the brand ambassador of the French brand in May 2022

The trophy can only be touched and held by a very select group of people, which includes former winners of the FIFA World Cup and heads of state.

Regulations state that the original trophy must remain in FIFA’s possession and cannot be won outright. The team winning the World Cup retains the authentic trophy temporarily and is then permanently awarded the tournament edition trophy, the FIFA World Cup Winner’s Trophy (which is gold-plated, rather than solid gold, and engraved with the year, host country, and winners of the respective event).

In Brazil in 2014, Carlos Puyol representing Spain, the 2010 World Champion, and Brazilian-born model Gisele Bundchen escorted the trophy, while in 2018 it was Philip Lahm of Germany and former Russian model Natalia Vodianova.

The brand’s campaign “Victory is a State of Mind” features Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Tens of thousands of soccer fans wearing French and Argentinian colors gathered at Doha's Lusail stadium on Sunday where the 2022 World Cup ends with a dream-like scenario for Qatar: a showdown between Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, both stars of Doha-owned Paris St Germain.

The throngs overcrowded Doha's metro with Qatar Rail delaying access to the stations as a modest closing ceremony kicked off inside the stadium with dancers celebrating 'A Night to Remember'. Thirty minutes before kick-off, the stadium appeared three-quarters full.

The crowd watched Qatar's air force planes flying over Lusail as the Gulf state also celebrated its national day, with thousands of police forces, including anti-riot units armed with water canons, securing the area.

After 63 matches, the World Cup in Qatar comes to a close with reigning champions France taking on Argentina in a showpiece final with both teams looking to add a third star to their crest. France's Mbappe and Argentina's Messi, both playing for the Qatari-owned club, are also a reminder of Qatar's influence on global soccer beyond the FIFA World Cup organization.
