Key domain operators group meets in Muscat

 
The Organisation of Asia Pacific Top Level Domains (APTLD) began its 82nd meeting in the Sultanate of Oman on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

The two-day meeting is being attended by a large number of specialists, academics and companies from different countries. Discussions include issues related to domain names and the Internet, technological and operational challenges for domain name registries, enhancement of skills, exchange of information among Member States, and topics that affect the stability of the Internet.

The meeting opened with a welcome address by Ai-Chen Lu, Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Top-Up Domain Operators Organization, to all attendees, who also thanked the authority for its active role in facilitating the implementation of the meeting.

Omar bin Abdullah al Qatbi, Executive Vice President of the Telecommunications Regulatory Sector at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), opened his speech by welcoming all attendees, stressing the importance of these meetings because of their impact on the process of transferring knowledge and exchanging experiences. He talked about the role of the TRA in regulating the telecommunications and postal sectors and the sector's contribution to achieving the goals of Oman's Vision 2040.

The meeting included a review of the Sultanate of Oman's experience in managing and regulating Omani domain names, presented by Eng Saif bin Saeed al Ghafri, Director of the Internet Domain Names Department at the TRA.

It reviewed the latest developments in the organisation, the most important of which is the increase in the number of members, and knowledge transfer and training in the fields of Internet domain names.

Some member states presented their experiences in this field. They explored ways to update and develop the domain name systems of countries, and how to maintain the security of these systems and ensure their stability. The latest technology in the DNS backup system was also reviewed.

The meeting witnessed the participation of some private international organizations such as RIPE NCC and ICANN in presenting the latest updates related to their work in this field.

The Organisation of Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Operators (APTLD) holds its meeting twice a year, with each meeting in a specific country.
