Seminar on women’s role in education and economy held

MUSCAT: A national seminar titled ‘Omani Women in Education and Economic Sectors, a Strategic Vision, Outlook and Challenges’, was held at Oman Institute for Oil and Gas, recently.

The seminar was organised by the Ministry of Social Development in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University (SQU).

Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education, presided over the seminar which was attended by HE Dr Laila bint Ahmed al Najar, Minister of Social Development, and senior officials, specialists and stakeholders.

The seminar highlights the regulatory legislation and rules pertaining to the education and economic sectors and aims to draw up ambitious goals for improving the services provided to Omani women in these sectors. This objective can be attained by identifying innovative ideas and methods, enriching ideas and possibilities for solutions. The seminar sought to identify points of strength and weakness as well as the mechanisms for developing the two sectors to devise applicable recommendations that aid the empowerment of Omani women.

Two sessions were held at the seminar, the first titled ‘Education for Girls and Women in the Light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution’. It dealt with future education, educational technology and its contributions to girls and women, educational curricula and the requirements of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The second session was titled ‘Sustainable economic development and its role in light of the current crises and challenges. It included the themes of: women workforce for a growing labour market, behavioural economics and its effectiveness in empowering women economically and legislation in light of the global economic developments.

The seminar came out with several recommendations including building a national database of Omani women’s expertise and competencies in all sectors including the education and economy sectors, employing Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), preparing and designing educational programmes and producing educational software for Omani girls and women in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Recommendations regarding sustainable development and its role in the current challenges and setbacks included the importance of activating the positive role of the private sector and the civil society organisations in supporting the empowerment of Omani women in various fields through innovating programmes and projects that can be invested locally such as the small and medium enterprises owned and operated by women and enable them to market their products.

The seminar highlighted the importance of building knowledge and knowledge-based economy in light of the data of the digital age to enhance opportunities for women and help them to contribute to the economy at the local and regional levels. — ONA
