The hot temperature of summer is a big challenge to doing any outdoor or physical activities. Except maybe for the mountains where the temperature remains relatively cooler like that in Jabal Shams or Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, the heat contributes to some just enjoying the cool breeze of the air conditioner indoors.
Everyone agrees however that physical activities are necessary to keep fit and healthy. These are a few activities you can try to avoid living a sedentary lifestyle even in the middle of summer.
Go for a morning
or night walk.
Not everyone is a morning person. So this greatly depends on which hour you’re most comfortable doing it. The temperature in the early morning before sunset is usually better than at noon so this trend has pick-up, especially for a lot of couples and families. Any physical activity you can do contributes to your physical health. Walking for about 30 minutes every day helps increase your cardiovascular fitness, boost your endurance and muscle power and also strengthen your bones while helping reduce fat. The Sultanate of Oman is blessed with so many locations ideal for good short walks. The Qurum and Muttrah area are ideal for these walks. Since you don’t require any special equipment, you can do this quickly even with kids.
Bond with the family
at a night camp.
Thankfully, we are a few months away from winter. This means that the night temperature isn’t too bad anymore. For weekends, you can definitely pack a picnic set and go for that much-needed night camp preferably by the beach. If you’re in Muscat, Bandar Khairan and Fins are amazing destinations for a family camp.
Learn a new hobby.
If you haven’t tried bowling yet, then you definitely owe your bowling arena a visit. This activity can be apt for the whole family and it will provide everyone with the kind of entertainment and physical activity that will get you sweating. Different locations also offer fun activities like archery, ice skating and even self-defence and dancing classes. Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean you can’t find a meaningful activity that you and your family can engage in.
Go on a boat ride or snorkelling activity.
The seas of Oman are ideal for a lot of fun activities and learning. Just within the city, it’s easy to find an adventure that will allow you to interact with nature. Whether swimming with whale sharks or snorkelling with sea turtles, several tour groups can offer a sunset cruise that will allow you to enjoy some water activities. As of late, Dimaniyat Islands has grown in popularity because of its pristine beaches and beautiful underwater corals. To cut costs, arrange for a group trip where you and your friends can share the fees.
Go for a long drive towards cooler destinations.
If you’re the more outgoing type, then driving for a few hours definitely won’t be a problem for you. Oman has several wadis with great canyons that protect you from the sun while going out and about. Wadi Mibam and Hoqain for example are great places to enjoy the water while the cliffs provide you shade while you explore the area. Mountain areas as well are relatively cooler so a trip during the weekend to Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and Jabal Shams will definitely at least help you find a different climate. Drive towards Ashkarah and you will discover pristine locations with cooler weather as well.
