Heavy rains lash over al Hajar Mountain range

Muscat: Heavy rains accompanied by active downward winds lashed over the al Hajar mountains and adjoining areas on Friday afternoon, causing wadis to overflow and trees to uproot.

The Weather Office on Friday warned of extensive thunderstorm activity over the Hajar mountains with chances of heavy to moderate rains.

Many wilayats also reported heavy sand storms.

“The activity of cumulus clouds on the Al Hajar mountains and thunderstorms accompanied by hail over the governorates of Ad Dhahirah and North Al Sharqiyah, with chances of rains over the rest of the adjacent wilayats are expected on Friday,” Met said in a statement.

Met warned thunderstorms in the wilayats of Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, accompanied by hail and active winds may lead to overflowing wadis.

In Dhofar, satellite images showed the condensation of monsoon clouds on the coasts and mountains of Dhofar Governorate.

The Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority on Friday warned sea-goers to stay away from the Arabian Sea due to the high waves and strong currents.

Authorities also urged to follow instructions and avoid crossing wadis during the rains.
