Muscat: Oman national basketball U-18 team is gearing up to take part in the GCC Basketball Championships that will be held in the UAE, Abu Dhabi, from July 28 until August 4.

The team is currently undergoing an intensive domestic camp at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex that will conclude on July 7.

Then, the team will have an external camp prior to travelling to Abu Dhabi to participate in the Gulf tourney. The GCC Basketball Championships will act as qualifiers for the final stage of FIBA U-18 Men’s Asia Championship in Iran this August.

The first and second placed teams will seal the spots for the final stage qualifiers.

The experienced national coach, Mohammed al Qusaimi, said that this camp is a vital preparatory stage to shape the players properly ahead of the forthcoming gulf championship.

“This is the third week of the camp and we had many morning and evening training sessions during the couple days ago. We preferred to have many local friendly games in this gathering against teams which comprised the senior former national team players. The Oman national basketball U-18 team managed to beat Zenat team 55/53 in the last game. There is another warm-up match on Saturday and will try to maximise the output from these fixtures,” he added.

The head coach of Oman basketball U-18 team added in his exclusive remarks to Oman Daily Observer that the team is seeking for an overseas camp.

“We are negotiating with different agencies to arrange for an external camp after Eid break. There are many suggestions on the destination including: Turkey, Bosnia, Egypt, but the final destination will depend on availability of strong friendly games in the camp,” he said.

Coach Al Qusaimi stated this team missed the gulf tourney in the previous edition when it was at junior level due to Covid-19 outbreak. “The existing squad of Oman players missed the gulf tourney of U-16 last version due to travel restrictions at that time. We are aiming for top show in this version and to register top results. Also, our focus is to compete on clinching one ticket to the Asian qualifiers,” he concluded.
