79 dead in Burkina Faso town attack

The confirmed death toll after a weekend attack on the town of Seytenga in northern Burkina Faso stands at 79 as of Tuesday, according to official figures from the West African country. Fifty bodies had already been recovered. Since then, 29 more bodies were found, the government in Ouagadougou announced on Tuesday. Armed groups attacked the village at the weekend. Witnesses initially put the death toll at 100.

The government in Burkina Faso assumes that it was a terrorist attack. The search for the dead will continue, but their work is being hampered by booby traps left in the area by the attackers. Many people fled to a community 47 kilometres away after the attack, according to the government. — dpa
