The two-day human rights symposium concluded on Tuesday on a high note with a resolve to introduce clarity on contractual and non-contractual human rights mechanisms and the role of the government and civil society institutions in this regard.

The symposium titled 'The Role of National Mechanisms in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights' saw participation from regional human rights agencies. They expressed appreciation for the role played by the Sultanate of Oman in protecting citizens' and residents' rights at all levels.

The event was organised by the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) in cooperation with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions.

Over a period of two days, three sessions were held, and nine papers presented. The presenters of the papers reviewed many topics, including an introduction to the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions and the foundations of establishing national institutions, the responsibilities of the OHRC in protecting and promoting human rights at the national level, and its role in the field of cooperation and coordination with regional and international human rights organisations.

The speakers also shed light on the responsibilities and efforts of government institutions to protect and promote human rights in terms of harmonising national legislation with international conventions, the most prominent human rights issues and model rules for the treatment of inmates, with an explanation of government efforts regarding the protection of the rights of the most favoured groups, as well as the goals and responsibilities of civil society associations and challenges they face.

The symposium aimed to introduce the national mechanisms with a resolve to protect and promote human rights, enhance cooperation and partnership between the Omani Committee and other relevant authorities, and highlight the role of the Committee with governmental and non-governmental organisations.

It also looked into raising the efficiency of participants to implement policies and practices to achieve the objectives of protecting and promoting human rights, reviewing efforts, exchanging best practices to overcome challenges, ensuring optimal implementation of the contents of regional and international instruments and strengthening cooperation mechanisms at the national and international levels.
