Oman eye second win against Bahrain today

Muscat: Oman futsal team will take on Bahrain on Tuesday in their second Group B match of West Asian Futsal Championship which is under way in Kuwait. The match will kick off at the Al Nasr club hall in Kuwait at 19:30 (Oman time).

Oman team, coached by national coach Younis al Fahdi, will chase for the second straight win to seal spot in the next round of the championship after they beat UAE 4-2 in the opener on Sunday night.

In the UAE match, Motasim al Shamsi broke the deadlock in the 12th minute as he opened the account for Oman while Zamil al Balushi netted second goal in the second half in 17th minute. Captain Samer al Balushi raised the margin to three goals and Mohammed Taqi ended the scoring campaign by registering Oman's fourth goal.

In the other Group B match, Bahrain and Lebanon ended at 1-1. Oman’s victory took them to lead the group with three points. Bahrain and Lebanon are positioned in the second and third places and UAE are placed in the bottom of the group. Oman will conclude their group matches on Thursday as they will meet Lebanon.

In the previous month, Oman futsal team had concluded their participation at the GCC Games which was held also in Kuwait. Oman began their campaign at the GCC Games in style with a 2-1 win over UAE team at Shaikh Saad Al Abdullah Multi Sports Complex B Stadium.

In the following game, Oman’s men suffered a 2-0 loss to Bahrain team and then another defeat from Saudi Arabia by 3-0 in the third fixture. Oman team ended their campaign against the hosts Kuwait with a 3-1 defeat.

The West Asian Futsal Championship will act as vital preparatory stage when Oman futsal team will make their debut at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup which will take place in Kuwait in September.

The Sultanate of Oman team will face a tough challenge of battling with the hosts Kuwait, 16-time Asian champions Thailand and Iraq in Group A. Uzbekistan led Group B besides Bahrain, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan while 12-time champions Iran were drawn in Group C besides Lebanon, Chinese Taipei and Indonesia. Japan, the only other team to lift the continental trophy, were drawn in Group D with Vietnam, Korea Republic and Saudi Arabia.
