His Highness Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs, Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, praised Oman media, appreciating it to have evolved over the past decade in terms of content and coverage.

In a statement issued at the General Conference of the 31st meeting of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre on Tuesday, he said that Oman media has been keeping pace with the global developments.

“Oman media has witnessed great transformations and has been able, with the support and care provided to it, to keep pace with all the developments and changes that the media is witnessing in the world,” he said.

The congress that began by paying homage to Shereen Abu Aqleh, the Palestinian journalist who was killed while on duty, is hosting nearly 350 journalists and other media people from 100 countries who are attending the 4-day conference which is the final in 100 years after the IFJ was formed in 1926.

This is the first time that a GCC country is hosting the IFJ conference and Oman is the second country in the Middle East region after Tunisia which hosted the 30th edition of the conference. “The 31st World Media Congress is an opportunity to learn about the Renewed Renaissance of the Sultanate of Oman in all economic, cultural, tourism and development fields, and the belief that the Sultanate of Oman has reposed in the media and its role in the renaissance and progress of nations is awe-inspiring,” he added.

During the four days of the media congress, the Press Photo Award for Journalists, first time in the region, which is given every three years will be announced. Besides, close association with the Asia Pacific Association for Press which is present in Oman for the conference is another milestone of the conference which is expected to give a fillip to the tourism sector.

The conference’s agenda cover a spectrum of topics, particularly discussing various social phenomena and holding the constitutive meeting of the Asia and Pacific Federation of Journalists (APFJ) .

The APFJ comprises representatives of journalism of unions from Asia and the Pacific.

The Sultanate of Oman proposed to the IFJ in 2019 to establish a federation for journalists that represents journalism unions of Asian and Pacific countries.

The event also included several presentations given by regional representatives on the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on journalism and newsrooms.

Meanwhile, the IFJ Gender Council also held its meeting on Tuesday. This meeting reviewed the council’s initiatives throughout the last three years.

It is worth noting that this event receives wide international coverage.
