Muscat: Oman settled for the runners-up position at the West Asian Federation (WAFF) Beach Soccer Championship after they lost narrowly by 3-2 against the UAE in the final late on Monday. Oman ended on the same place in the first edition of the championship in Iran in 2013 as they had defeated by the hosts Iran in the final.
In Saudi Arabian city of Jizan, Bahrain ended the championship in third place as they thumped Palestine 5-2 in the third and fourth play-off. Hosts Saudi Arabia came in sixth after they beat Lebanon 5-3.
In the final, Oman took the lead through Yahya al Muraiki but the response from the opponents was quick as they equalised by Waleed Basheer.
In the following period, the UAE strikers pressed hard towards Oman’s goalie Younis al Owaisi and they managed to score second goal by Hisham Muntaser. Later, Talib Hilal’s men bounced back to find the equaliser to make it 2-2. Oman’s players joy did not last for long as the UAE striker Waleed Basheer powered his team to lift the title as he scored the winner to end the game at 3-2.
Oman’s beach soccer team began their campaign at WAFF Championship in Group A with a match against the UAE. The match ended in favour of coach Talib Hilal’s men 4-2. Oman thumped Kuwait 3-1 in the second game before suffering to a 4-3 loss against Lebanon in the concluding game of the group matches. In semifinal, Talib Hilal’s men defeated Palestine 6-3 to move into the final match.
Oman’s goalkeeper Younis al Owaisi was named as the best goalie of the tournament. UAE player Waleed Basheer won the best player award of the tournament while his team-mate Rashid Eid claimed the top-scorer prize as he scored four goals.
Oman's experienced coach Talib Hilal hailed the players for the top efforts during the championship. “The team showed a top performance during the championship. We have played five strong fixtures despite long absence since our team’s last appearance at the 2021 Fifa World Beach Soccer Championship. The team had prepared for this championship within 24 days only,” he said after the match.
“The new young faces were brilliant including Yahya al Muraiki who netted three goals besides Nouh al Battashi. Thanks to all the players for their top show. The team played five top games within short period of six days only. Advancing to the concluding game with half of the new faces in the squad is a good accomplishment for the team,” he ended.
