350 journalists from 100 countries to attend 31st IFJ Congress

MUSCAT: HH Sayyid Asaad bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs, Personal Representative of His Majesty the Sultan, will preside over the opening ceremony of the 31st Congress of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

The Omani Journalists Association (OJA) will represent the Sultanate of Oman in hosting the four-day event which starts on May 31.

The congress gains importance locally, regionally and internationally as the most prominent journalism and media related event in the Middle East. As many as 350 journalists, representing associations from over 100 countries will be taking part in the event, in addition to 50 journalists and media personalities who represent newspapers, radios, television channels and e-newspapers from all over the world.

Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak al Araimi, Chairman of the OJA Board of Directors, said that the OJA, in cooperation with the Secretariat General of the IFJ, will announce the Asian Federation for Journalists, which will kick start in Muscat.

During the opening ceremony of the congress, the Sultanate of Oman’s award for the best press photo in the world will be announced and the families of 5 journalists who died on-job will be honoured.

Oman is the second Arab country after Tunisia and the first Asian country to host the IFJ congress.

The conference will be a new focal point and a starting point for the International Federation of Journalists. With this four-day conference, the Omani Journalists Association will assume its appropriate position in the International Federation of Journalists and the Asian Federation of Journalists, in addition to its presence in the General Secretariat and the leadership of the Union of Arab Journalists. — ONA
