The Muscat Municipality has urged both citizens and residents not to involve in barbecuing at places where it is not allowed and to use places which are dedicated for such activities.
Most of the beaches and parks are not supposed to be used for such cooking activities in view of the convenience of fellow visitors, beauty of the places and environmental issues and isolated places where people don't frequent can be used for the same.
Spoiling the beaches in Oman can attract a fine of RO 100 and repeated offence can attract multiple fines, according to the Muscat Municipality.
'Such (barbecuing at undesignated places) activities pose threat to both humans and environment and people camping and engaging in such outdoor activities should refrain from them'', said a Muscat Municipality official.
The civic body has issued Decree 31/2019 banning certain activities in public places. Accordingly, the use of fire for barbecue in parks, public beaches, corridors and green spaces except in the sites and places designated for this purpose by the municipality.
Involving in grilling or barbecuing or lighting an open fire at parks, public beaches and grassy areas except at those places designated for grilling by the municipality is part of the regulatory measures aimed at organising the process of starting a fire in public places, grassy areas, gardens, parks, public beaches, corridors and green spaces by allocating sites and places for this purpose.
It is also aimed at ensuring the visitors of public parks and beaches and residents near these sites are not disturbed.
The fine has been increased from RO 20 to RO 100 as the number of cases went high and beach-goers and residents near such places lodged complaints due to the smoke and smell around.
'The Municipality Act has further banned smoking shisha, in view of the inconvenience caused to many'', he further said.
The municipality calls on people holidaying, visiting beaches and parks to adhere to the cleanliness of these sites and their overall appearance, and to make Eid holidays healthier and happier for all. — ONA
