Inclusion of sign language in curricula debated

MUSCAT: The 47th Arab Deaf Week programme, organised by the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning at Al Amal School for the Deaf under the theme 'Inclusion of sign language in the curricula of education at all levels, concluded on Wednesday.
The closing ceremony, held at Al Araimi Complex under the auspices of Qassim al Ameri, Majlis Ash'shura member from Al Seeb, was attended by Al Jabri, Assistant Director-General of the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning for Continuous Learning, employees of the Special Education Department, management and members of the administrative and teaching staff, participants from government and private institutions, students and invited guests.
An exhibition titled 'Angels of Hope', conducted in this connection, was participated by several government, private and civil institutions. The exhibition had a number of corners including: career guidance (student companies), life skills (Tamkeen project), the environmental team ( Environmental Style Project), plastic arts, photography (my lens), musical skills (hymns), computer department - the culture of the deaf - 'Robot', the speech and language department, interactive corners for 'My Fingers Create', flower arrangement, photography studio, preparation corner (hands are creative), and a trust imprint corner.
The participating institutions were honoured on the occasion.
The Arab Deaf Week included several events. On the first day, an exhibition was organised which included a corner for security and safety for the Royal Oman Police (General Traffic Department) represented by the Traffic Safety Institute, and a stall for the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, besides corners for dairy, beekeeping, the Association of Disabled Children (Al Seeb Rehabilitation Centre), scientific projects that contained innovations of students of Al Amal School for the Deaf, and the environmental team “My school produces fertiliser”. The first day also included a workshop on sign language.
The second day events included training sessions for general education teachers of government schools from the Governorate of Muscat in sign language and a recreational sports event for students of the first cycle at Al Amal School for the Deaf in Al Amal Club.
The third day saw a discussion on the inclusion of sign language in the curricula at various academic levels, and it touched upon the training programmes offered by the Gulf Society for the Disabled in the Sultanate of Oman, the reality of people with hearing disabilities at Sultan Qaboos University, and the extent to which the curricula at SQU are linked with education in terms of the special curriculum, the educational curricula of the Ministry of Education, the mechanism for adapting them for students with hearing disabilities, and the inclusion of sign language.
