Significant increase seen in farmed fin fish production

MUSCAT: Blue Waters, a subsidiary of Fisheries Development Oman (FDO), saw a significant increase in its sales of farmed fin fish in 2021, registering 1,350 tonnes, an increase of 27 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. The company said it is targeting an output of 2,350 tonnes this year.
Eng Nabil bin Salem al Ruwaidi, CEO, Blue Waters, said that the company aims to increase its production capacity of the existing floating cage farm in the Wilayat of Qurayat to 5,000 tonnes over the next three years. This is part of its expansion plans and its vision to advance the fish farming industry in the Sultanate of Oman to meet the increasing demand for fish in the GCC countries. He explained that the company’s products have been very popular with consumers across the Gulf region because of their high quality.
A number of projects associated with fish farming in the Wilayat of Qurayat were announced that would place the wilayat as home for the largest aquaculture projects in the Sultanate of Oman. He noted that a fish packaging factory and a complex of fodder stores are currently under implementation at the fishing port in Qurayat. In the coming years, a fish hatchery will be established in the Ramla area in Qurayat in addition to a specialised centre for the maintenance of floating cages in the Daghmar area.
Meanwhile, the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta accounted for 70.1 per cent of the Sultanate of Oman’s production of fish during the year 2021 through artisanal fishing, and the production of the two governorates amounted to 646,734 tonnes of fish, crustaceans, mollusks. -- ONA
