Ministry of Education hosts virtual forum for supervisors

The Ministry of Education, represented by the Department of Applied Sciences Supervision in the Directorate-General of Educational Supervision, organised the virtual forum for the supervision of applied sciences 'Professional Week', earlier this week, under the auspices of Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Under-Secretary for Education. The virtual forum came under the slogan: Educational Supervision 'Empowerment and Development'.

The forum kicked off on Sunday in the presence of a number of professors from Sultan Qaboos University and the University of Nizwa, a number of directors of the supervision departments and their assistants, the first supervisors and educational supervisors at the Ministry’s general office and the educational directorates in the governorates, and a number of the first teachers from the various schools of the educational directorates in the governorates.

On the first day of the forum, the Under-Secretary for Education, launched the webpage for the Applied Science Supervision Department, through which employees in this department can share files, data, news and resources, with the aim of facilitating work and managing organised knowledge. The share point page also aims at facilitating cooperation and communication for team members inside and outside the institution, publishing and educating about the most important events and quick access to links to virtual training programmes and worksheets.

He also launched the electronic magazine: 'Supervisory Flashes', which is issued by the media team in the Directorate-General of Educational Supervision (Department of Applied Science Supervision). The ten-page magazine aims at exchanging educational knowledge in general and supervisory in particular, and introducing supervisory activities implemented by the Applied Science Supervision Department, and the supervisory scientific articles on the developments in this field.

The virtual forum covered four main topics: 'Developing practices and empowering supervisory groups', 'educational reality and educational developments', 'Enhancing future skills in supervisory work', and 'leading local and international experiences in supervision'. Each of the first two days of the forum included six papers presented in two synchronous sessions.

The third day of the forum included five papers on educational projects, presented synchronously, followed by presenting ten other papers synchronously as well. The fourth day of the forum included five papers and ended with a number of recommendations.

The recommendations included that the educational supervisors should deal with the mentality of the leader, whether in terms of convictions, knowledge, or skills and facilitate the process of effective professional development for teachers by bringing about a transformation in their thinking, beyond the acquisition of new skills and knowledge and helping them to rethink their teaching practices. It also recommended to make more effective, activating virtual communities of practice that lead to improving job competencies, and gaining a deeper understanding of the concept of virtual communities of practice and its importance, and role in improving the educational process, through the development and improvement of job competencies for teachers, and for supervisors with learning difficulties to care about the cognitive growth of teachers with learning difficulties.

The recommendations also included the establishment of a special section at the Ministry of Education (Artificial Intelligence Department) specialised in smart applications, robotics competitions, smart content and other content related to the artificial intelligence sector. The forum also recommended adopting the teaching of artificial intelligence course in academic universities and making an accurate description of the applications of artificial intelligence among resource leaders. It also emphasised the importance of activating the role of the teacher’s professional achievement file in achieving sustainable self-professional development for the teacher and raising the level of job performance and professional achievement in a way that contributes to supporting the application of the system of measuring individual performance and institutional proficiency to achieve Oman Vision 2040 in the educational system.
