Shura panel reviews plans for facing severe weather

Muscat: The Health and Environment Committee of Majlis Ash’shura held its eighth regular meeting of the third annual session under the chairmanship of Hilal bin Hamad al Sarmi, on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the committee hosted Engineer Ali bin Mohammed al Abri, Under-secretary for Water Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, to discuss an expressed desire on the handling of environmental impact of adverse weather conditions.
The meeting discussed the ministry’s efforts to address environmental issues resulting from adverse weather conditions especially with regard to rainwater drainage.
The meeting also discussed the ministry’s plan to protect the fisheries and agriculture sectors and food and water security during adverse weather conditions.
The meeting stressed the importance of the legislation in curbing encroachment on waids, the importance of conducting systematic study on water drainage in cities especially with regard to planning water drainage paths taking into account safety distance from power transformers and water lines.
The meeting stressed the need to enhance construction of protection dams and to follow up the preparation of designs and ascertain the specifications and requirements for dam construction. The meeting underscored the importance of rapid response to health crises resulting from natural catastrophes especially the contamination of food and groundwater wells.
