MUSCAT: The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) will launch a campaign on Sunday against commercial fraud entitled ‘Stick to Genuine Products’.

The campaign targets to increase awareness about the unified GCC Anti-Commercial Fraud Law, acquainting consumers with the commercial practices that are considered commercial fraud and acquainting the suppliers and traders with the legal punishment for commercial fraud.

The campaign comes in accordance with an innovative media plan concerned with both parties of the consumer process in order to enhance consumer awareness on the risks of commercial fraud and to enable the supplier to stay away from any practices that could be considered commercial fraud.

The Consumer Protection Authority issued 1,444 commercial violations until the end of last year. The CPA carried out 53 seizures related to adulterated goods and services. The authority received 250 complaints and 627 reports related to commercial fraud by the end of 2021, according to statistics issued by the CPA.

Khalid bin Ali al Rashidi, Director of Communications and Media Department at CPA, said that the department mainly focuses on the idea that consumer awareness is the first line of defence for his consumer rights. Hence the department has paid great attention to raising awareness about the dangers of commercial fraud by organising this campaign and other coming campaigns that will follow, all of which deal with commercial fraud and other practices that endanger the health and safety of the consumers.

The campaign also includes organising awareness seminars and workshops in all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, producing awareness materials broadcast on all media, preparing pages and brochures, and conducting radio and television interviews. This is in addition to holding events with the participation of specialists and influencers to raise awareness of commercial fraud and its negative effects on the consumers, the official said.
