Trees planted as part of green campaign

The Oman Environment Day, which falls on January 8 every year, saw a series of activities, including initiatives to mark the day in various parts of the country by planting trees to increase the country's green cover. To realise this, the Environment Authority has set an ambitious plan to have 10 million trees.
According to the Authority, cyclones and rains have increased tree cover in many governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. In addition, a rise in water level in the underground basins has also been observed.
Marking the Day, the conclusion of the Empty Quarter Festival witnessed several activities, including a five-km walk followed by plantation of 200 trees of Sidr and Ghaf as well as cleaning of tourist sites in the desert.
The Environment Department in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah held a campaign to plant and distribute 2,000 seedlings of Omani wild trees in the Wilayat of Nizwa in cooperation with the Wali of Nizwa.
In cooperation with the Environment Administration in Al Wusta Governorate, the Marine Environment Conservation Department carried out a campaign to plant 2,300 saplings of cane trees in addition to some efforts made to protect and enrich marine habitats.
Continuing with the framework of the national initiative to plant 10 million trees, the Environment Administration in Northern Al Batinah Governorate involved a group of students and planted 1,200 saplings in Shinas Creek. The plantation comes as a complement to the efforts of the Authority to implement the qualification programme of the youngsters in the framework of the National Agriculture Initiative.
Heritage and Tourism department in the North Sharqiya Governorate planted 230 wild seedlings in the Arabian Oryx Camps, Desert Nights, Sama Al Wasel, Al Rahala camp, and Bidiyah Tourist Camp in cooperation with the Environment Authority and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The initiative aims to plant 1,000 wild seedlings in the tourist camps in Ramal Al Sharqiyah(Sharqiyah Sands) in multiple stages.
