OHRC provides legal help to residents, citizens

Muscat: During the year 2021, the Omani Human Rights Committee (OHRC) received more than 385 messages from citizens and residents seeking legal support and advice and directed the concerned authorities to follow up on the matter and take the necessary measures.

The legal advice was sought on matters related to criminal cases, personal and labor issues, commercial and civil statuses, petitions for reconsideration, and judicial assistance.

The committee also received and monitored 65 messages on human rights and humanitarian issues, which were at the core of its competence and among its responsibilities, and in coordination with the competent authorities, it directly intervened to find appropriate solutions.

With regard to following up on the rights of prison inmates in the Sultanate of Oman, the Committee received communication in January 2021 from an inmate of the central prison requesting temporary release for health reasons.

The committee submitted a report to the Public Prosecution and the inmate was granted temporary release. He returned to prison when his health condition permitted and after it was approved by a competent medical committee to complete the execution of his sentence.

The committee also received a report in June 2021 from an inmate requesting the release or postponement of his sentence, in appreciation of his exceptional health conditions, and in coordination with the Royal Oman Police, it was reported that he was released as per the Royal Pardon.
