World Environment Day observed

MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, marked on Thursday the World Environment Day, which is celebrated on January 8 each year.
Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, valued the attention accorded by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to the environmental affairs specially the preservation and protection of wildlife.
In comments to Oman News Agency (ONA), the chairman of the Environment Authority said that the Authority is preparing the national strategy for environment protection. The goals of the strategy are linked to the Oman Vision 2040 and will endeavour to enhance environmental performance.
The work teams of the Environment Authority have accomplished 52 projects and initiatives that were implemented in various environmental sectors.
The Authority set up stations for the measuring and monitoring of air quality, Al Amri said, adding that there is cooperation between the Environment Authority and the private sector to relocate some of the existing stations to ensure better measurement of air quality in North Al Batinah Governorate and the Wilayat of Sur. Besides, the Authority set up and operated additional stations. The Authority has a programme with the industrial free zone in Dhofar Governorate to set up a number of stations to ensure continuous monitoring of air quality in various Omani environments in the industrial and free zones.
The chairman of the Environment Authority pointed out that the Authority has planted more than 370,000 trees at government, military and private establishments. It also distributed seedlings to citizens to plant in their homes. —ONA
