Sultanate of Omani pair impress at West Asia Beach Volleyball tourney

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman beach volleyball team delivered an impressive performance, claiming runner up place, in the West Asia Beach Volleyball Zonal Tour which concluded in Qatar on Monday.

At Aspire Zone in Doha, Sultanate of Oman team bikers represented by Haitham al Shuraiqi and Mazin al Hashmi suffered a 2-0 loss against the hosts Qatar in the final match of the Asian tourney to end in second place.

With two points only, the Qatari duo managed to complete the first half of the concluding fixture by 19-20 after tough competition.

In the following set, Oman’s duo al Shuraiqi and al Hashmi worked hard to bounce back as they managed to bring the gap in one point only at 6-7 in the earlier of the half.

Later, the hosts raised the gap to two points at 7-9. Qatar’s experienced bikers dominated the game and reached four points difference.



Prior to the dying minutes, Sultanate of Oman heroes brought the match to square one as they registered a draw at 18-18. The final attempts of the half went to the opposition team who managed to end the encounter on a winning note at 19-21.

The national team secured a slot in the semifinals of the championship after beating Syria 2-0. The first game ended at 21-7 while the second game finished in 21-13. In the group matches, the Sultanate of Oman’s duo recorded three victories against Iraq 2-0, Jordan 2-0 and Palestine with the same result.

The championship featured participation of seven teams distributed into two groups. The group A included the hosts Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Sultanate of Oman was clubbed in group B beside Jordan, Palestine and Iraq. The top two teams from each group advanced to the semis. Qatar and Syria qualified from group A while Sultanate of Oman and Palestine moved from group B to the next round. The third-place award went to Palestine team as they defeated Syrian team 2-0.
