NEW YORK: The Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Bahrain held a celebration to mark the World Arabic Language Day which falls on December 18 each year, at the United Nations on Saturday.

Ambassador Dr Mohammed bin Awad al Hassan, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, said that the Arabic language is the source of our nation’s strength and it is our duty to preserve it.

UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, affirmed that the Arabic language is one of the oldest languages spoken by humans since the dawn of history linking peoples through literature, music, poetry and philosophy. He added that Arabic was the common language of communication in trade, arts and science.

The UN secretary-general said that Arabic is a rich and living language that unifies hundreds of millions of people in 22 Arabic-speaking countries and is used by 2 billion Muslims in their prayers. He added that the Arabic language contributes to communication between peoples and nations and to moving towards a multi-language organisation that brings all peoples under its umbrella.

While we celebrate Arabic language today, we should enhance dialogue and mutual understanding and we celebrate together the diversity of the human family, the UN secretary-general concluded. — ONA
