The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) is taking steps to ensure that the large amounts of commercially valuable industrial waste being generated in the country are being channeled towards value-adding recycling activities that help support job creation and GDP growth.

This was reiterated at a workshop organised by the Ministry at the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) on Sunday. The forum was convened to resolve challenges faced by businesses engaged in the export, import and recycling of industrial waste. It was also attended by representatives of the Royal Oman Police, be’ah and the Environment Authority.

Following opening remarks by Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Under-Secretary for Commerce and Industry, the discussions focused on the importance of localizing waste recycling industries with a view to maximising value addition. The goal is to regulate exports of commercially useful waste that can be reprocessed in useful materials and thereby create opportunities for the local economy.

Eng Sami bin Salem al-Sahib, Director General of Industry, said the demand for recycled materials was expected to rise globally as new resources are on the decline. SMEs have the opportunities to invest in recycling projects, he noted.

He outlined the potential for investments in recycling activities involving metal scrap, plastics and waste oil, adding that a thriving recycling sector is a key objective of the Industrial Strategy 2040.

An estimated 230,000 tons of waste were exported in 2020 led by waste paper (59 per cent), copper scrap (24 per cent) iron scrap (9 per cent). Imports of waste reached 680,000 tons during the same period, comprising iron scrap (57 per cent), copper scrap (34 per cent), plastic waste (6 per cent). (With inputs from ONA)
