It’s a Super Sunday and obviously the teams with the highest fan followings in IPL are going to lock horns for the bragging rights.
In the afternoon, Kolkata Knight Riders locks horns with the Chennai Super Kings in match # 38 of the IPL 2021. While, in the evening, the perennial underachievers Royal Challengers Bangalore will be looking to make a comeback in match # 39 of the second leg of IPL 2021 against the champion Mumbai Indians.
Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders
Head to Head – Out of the 26 matches between them, Chennai Super Kings have dominated by winning 16 encounters, while Kolkata Knight Riders has won nine of them and one match didn’t produce a result. The match is in Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi where the pitch has been a tricky one for batting in the tournament, especially for the teams, batting first. The spinners have gotten quite a significant amount of turn from the surface. Chasing has been easier on the track. The average first inning score has been 159 (last 24 IPL matches on this venue)
Kolkata Knight Riders - The Men in Gold and Purple defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi to enter the top four. Going into the next game, KKR can take heart from the fact that they beat the MS Dhoni-led Super Kings last year when they faced each other at the same venue.
Chennai Super Kings - CSK, on the other hand, must be high on confidence as well. They have beaten the Challengers and Mumbai to climb the top of the points table. Another win will almost take them into the playoffs. In their previous meeting, CSK defeated the Knights by 18 runs after posting 220 for three on the board.
What to Expect from the match?
In the second leg, KKR batting has impressed, especially the top order with Vankatesh Iyer, Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi. While with the ball, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine have been outstanding. On the other hand, for Chennai Super Kings, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been in the form of his life with the bat. With a very long batting line up, all the others have been pitching in. With the ball, Dwayne Bravo has been shining bright in the middle and death overs. Although other bowlers haven’t done that great, but a couple of magical spells from Dwayne Bravo in the last two games has been the difference.
Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Mumbai Indians
RCB and Mumbai Indians will have a point to prove as the match will take place at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium Dubai on Sunday (September). Both teams were pretty impressive in the first half of the tournament and their spot in the playoffs seemed quite certain. However, both RCB and MI have made a dismal start to the UAE, suffering defeats in the first two games. Hence, getting back to the winning ways is of extreme importance. Notably, the Virat Kohli-led side walked away with a thrilling two-wicket triumph when these two sides met in the first half of the competition.
Royal Challengers Bangalore – The team that has been unable to get their hands on the IPL silverware since its inception, yet they have one of the biggest and most loyal fan bases in the IPL. Skipper Virat Kohli has been able to find form in the last game against Chennai Super Kings, but the middle order wasn’t able to capitalize. In fact, the middle order and the bowling has always been a problem for Royal Challengers Bangalore. They have to win three games out of the remaining five and if they don’t qualify this time, then this year will be the most disappointing seasons of all times, considering the position they have been.
Mumbai Indians – One wouldn’t be wrong, if Mumbai Indians would be called the most balanced team of the Indian Premier League of all times. The results speak volumes about this statement. The team management has really believed in focusing on the core and this core has done extremely well for Mumbai Indians, year-after-year. But currently, the likes of Hardik Pandya, are being missed and the lack of form amongst the core is costing Mumbai big time.
What to expect in the match?
The match is at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. It’s a good sporting wicket where quick bowlers will get maximum assistance from the surface in the powerplay. It’s all about keeping the wickets in the hand, as batting will become easier as the game progresses. Expect a special one from AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell. Tim David might have one more game, to prove his mantle. Rajat Patidar might come in for Srikar Bharat, Shahbaz Ahmed might come in for Navdeep Saini and George Garton might come in for Wanindu Hasaranga. Mumbai Indians will be looking for the fitness for Hardik Pandya to replace Saurabh Tiwary. Anukul Roy could get a match in the place of Krunal Pandya as well.
Royal Challengers might come out on top in this one, with the injuries affecting Mumbai Indians in a big way, while Royal Challengers Bangalore might play some cricket with freedom, which might really make them lethal.
