Mutttrah has one more added attraction in arts and that is Kadok Muscat - art studio by the artist Murtadha al Lawati.

With the availability of originals and official copies with copyrights along with a live art studio training for Omani and expat art enthusiasts, Kadok Muscat, the newly inaugurated art studio wants to look at all aspects of art.

The central area of the studio is the artist session, where live work can be enjoyed, but the idea is to take appreciation of art and its market value to the next level.

“The art market in Oman is still weak and not many people know much about art. This is my aim - to make the society aware about art and its importance. But the fact also remains that there are good art buyers in Oman now,” noted Murtadha.

“Kadok as a company or an establishment, would like to offer training for young Omanis in marketing and in business especially on how to be involved in art market,” said the acclaimed artist.

“Kadok is a nickname used often in Muttrah. In Muttrah we always like to give nicknames to people. I chose the name because he could be a character representing the culture and lifestyle of Muttrah in the past. I felt this could be a brand and that is how the idea came up,” explained Murtadha al Lawati.

An art gallery features paintings of many artists with different styles, but private studio is based on one artist and focusing on his/her work and the artist’s workshop is also included in the studio.

“If people take appointment, the visitors can actually see how I do my work,” he said.

Murtada’s style of work is pen and ink and watercolor. He prefers smaller sketches compared to large canvases. But the sketches depict characters he comes across in day to day life in Muttrah as well as cultural and natural landscapes of Oman.

“Smaller sketches are popular in Europe and America, and across the world people like to collect smaller sketches and are considered equivalent to big paintings. However, I used to work on oil and all other media of art because I am a life artist drawing what I see, I realised the sketches were perfect because I could go anywhere as far as I wanted with my ideas with sketches. I think sketching is a beautiful style and I am willing to give training to interested individuals,” the Muttrah born artist said.

He is willing to offer art courses for Omanis and expatriates who are keen on drawing because he believes drawing is different from painting.

“Drawing with pen is different from painting with a brush. These are totally two different techniques,” pointed out the artist.
