Expansion of Masirah fishing harbour in South Al Sharqiyah underway

MASIRAH: The expansion of the fishing harbour in the Wilayat of Masirah in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate continues with local funding and participation of the private sector under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
Aimed at developing fisheries wealth, boosting food security and upgrading the port’s infrastructure, the project involves the construction of a marina berth for the mooring of artisanal and coastal fishing vessels, and other fishing boats. The total length of the two berths is approximately 180 metres.
Youssef bin Hamad al Nahdi, head of the Fisheries Development Center at the Ministry of Agricultural and Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources, said that the project aims to expand the fishing port as a result of the increase in the number of fishermen and the increase in the number of boats and fishing vessels.
The project also includes the expansion and development of the refuelling and provisioning area, as well as the construction of a slide for advanced and large boats. It is expected to be completed by the end of August.
It is worth noting that the fish production from artisanal fishing in the Wilayat of Masirah for 2020, amounted to 24,239 tonnes, with a total value of RO 19,833,000 compared to 15,359 tonnes with a value of RO 1,3756,000 in 2019. — ONA
