Oman participates in ROPME extraordinary meeting

 

Muscat: The Sultanate, represented by the Environment Authority (EA) participated in the extraordinary virtual meeting of the Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME).

Eng Sulaiman Nasser al Akhzami, Director General of Nature Preservation, said that EA is effectively practicing its role in preserving marine environment in the Sultanate by following up the services offered in ports, as well as the fishing and shipping activities, the movement of oil tankers and various maritime trade activities.

Al Akhzami stressed the importance of supporting marine pollution control programmes in the region in order to save marine life from deterioration.

The Regional Organization for the Protection of the Marine Environment (ROPME) operates in other countries besides the Sultanate, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Sultanate’s joining to the ROPME was ratified in 1979 as per the Royal Decree No 79/8. --ONA
