It’s time to witness the aura unfolded by the onset of Khareef, the magical monsoon of Dhofar which has the tremendous might to transform the entire landscape green. The lush green panorama is soothing to the eyes, is refreshing and replenishing, it symbolises healing and growth and the list is long when it comes to green. According to research published by the Health Council of Netherlands, people tend to seek out nature when they feel stressed or tired because they presume nature to have a restorative effect.

In the Covid era, when mental health is being grossly impacted let us talk about the green. Green is the nature insignia and hence is the emblem of healing and reviving the power of nature. Natural green landscapes have immense benefits on human psychology.

Pandemic has made us more confined in our dwellings away from nature and somewhere this has been deteriorating our mental well-being.

However, nature is always ready to embrace us with open arms. All you need is to surrender to the splendour of green and let it take off all your uneasiness. Walking and spending some time in the greener surroundings is always rejuvenating for human behavioural health.

Our ancestors resided closer to the greener habitats which bestowed immense health benefits and well being. It has been majorly incorporated in modern-day buildings and designs to bring positive effects on health and eventually improving productivity.

The largest epidemiological study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences documents a positive connection between green space and mental health. It can encourage exercise, provide spaces for socialising, decrease noise and air pollution, and improve immune function by providing exposure to beneficial microbiota. It also can help with psychological restoration; that is, green space provides a respite for over-stimulated minds.

For the kids as well, green assists magnificently with their wellbeing boosting their cognitive performance and improved physical activity.

Children gain attention and working memory benefits when they are exposed to greenery, says a study led by Payam Dadvand of the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona. In addition, exposure to natural settings may be widely effective in reducing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms in children.

The crux of the matter is when green has so much to give why abstain from not deriving the health benefits? Be it a long drive with your spouse or spending time in the lush green valleys all by yourself or with a dear one, let the magnificence of khareef reform you, take off all your weariness, and grant you respite from the reckless overactivity of work. Because that is what the power of green is; transforming life for the better through peace and tranquillity.

But you should venture into the greenkeeping in mind all the guidelines of the Supreme Committee. (The author is a general physician, content creator, health and wellness adviser. Email: dr.nisma.healthyvows@gmail.com)
