For the first time after the Covid-19 tightened its grip on the country last year, the number of active cases were lower than the new ones on Monday, giving hope to healthcare workers as well as the public. But we should not let the guard down, cautions a senior doctor in the Ministry of Health.
The ministry has reported 572 fresh Covid-19 cases of infection and 723 recoveries on Monday. The toll also fell to 18 deaths, which is a fall of nearly 35 per cent compared to the previous day.
'The present statistics is a relief... but we shouldn't be taking it for granted. This is the time we stick to preventive measures including social distancing so that we can sooner or later conquer the virus completely,' said Dr Mahmood al Rahbi, Head of Emergencies at Al Nahda Hospital.
Meanwhile, as many as 1,926,307 people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in the Sultanate since the start of the National Immunization Campaign (53 per cent of the targeted population).
The number of those who took the first dose of vaccine stood at 1,587,784 comprising 45 per cent, while the number of those who took two doses stood at 338,523 comprising 10 per cent.
Muscat Governorate came first in the number of vaccinated people which has reached 618,264 (55 per cent of the target category) followed by North Al Batinah with 234,808 (39 per cent), then South Al Batinah by 153,277 (45 per cent).
On Monday, vaccination centres in all governorates of the Sultanate witnessed good turnout from the target segments.
Till today, the total number of coronavirus cases in the Sultanate touched 294,526 with recovery at the rate of 93.9 per cent. Total recovered cases stood at 27,6483. Total deaths reached 3,771. The number of active cases was 14,272.
A total of 292 Covid-19 patients were admitted to intensive care units in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, authorities have asked people to avoid gatherings in public and private places, wash hands, use facemasks, failing which stringent actions will be initiated against the offenders. (With ONA inputs)
