Within the National Strategy for Immunisation against Coronavirus (Covid-19), the Ministry of Health on Sunday began administering vaccines to a new target segment, which includes people aged 18 and above in all governorates of the Sultanate.
A steady stream of citizens comprising a majority of youngsters was seen from 7 am queueing up for the vaccination drive at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Apart from Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre in Muscat, Sahil Health Centre in the Wilayat of Qurayat has started receiving targeted people with full adherence to health measures.
As many as 8,000 people, predominantly women, took their first dose of the vaccine while many waited for their turn outside the hall. There are nearly 60 booths which can accommodate between 4,000 to 8,000 people a day.
'The procedures for getting vaccinated are very easy to follow and we have incorporated single window system for smooth registration and vaccination processes,' said Dr Anbren Said al Balushi, Centre Incharge at the OCEC.
There are dedicated volunteers apart from personnel from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Royal Oman Police (ROP), National Scouts and Guides, Oman Air, Omran, and other public and private organisations. An exclusive waiting area, proper signage, barcoded registration procedures, and ample parking are provided while clear guidance and awareness programmes are being carried out by the volunteers here.
'Everyone should be part of this national campaign, and everyone should initiate to register on Tarassud Plus to slot vaccination. Nonetheless, all procedures will be taken care of once a person walks in to the OCEC,' added Dr Anbren, who is also the family physician and head of Health Centre in Al Hail.
Adding the new target group is part of the national vaccination strategy, this will help achieve the goal of vaccinating 70 per cent of the population by the year-end, according to the ministry officials.
In association with various bodies, the Ministry of Health has been organising vaccination campaigns for various target groups and ministries well as public and private groups, and the majority of people are seen taking their vaccine from the vaccination centres and private hospitals.
Oman began to vaccinate the first target group of people some six months ago, and the groups included people above 65 years, people suffering from chronic diseases, frontline workers including medical staff and the like at various schools, grounds etc.
A mass vaccination camp for people above 45 years of age began at the OCEC on June 20 and continued for many weeks. The ministry has kept on adding more target groups and more governmental departments, ministries and Public Authorities in the past few weeks, and the latest among the target group is the youngsters above 18.
'We encourage the public to get vaccinated according to the dates and times allotted to each sector and to be a part of the nation building march and to ignore the negative news as no scientific proof has been identified to support the fake claim that vaccine has side effects,' she further said.
A number of targeted people for vaccination expressed their satisfaction with the drive and the easiness of procedures in vaccination centres. They also valued the efforts of the government in ensuring the health of citizens and residents alike.
The Directorate-General of Health Services in Muscat Governorate also continues providing the drive-thru vaccination service at Oman Automobile Association.
In a statement, Thamra Said al Ghafri, acting Director General of Health Services in the Governorate of Muscat, said that the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre saw a good turnout of people and a smooth vaccination process.
Al Ghafri added that the drive-thru vaccination service in the Oman Automobile Association is offered from 2 to 7 pm. Further updates will be given weekly on this service.
Moreover, the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah on Sunday started vaccinating people aged 18 and above with the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine. The complex also continues vaccinating other targeted age groups. (With ONA inputs)
