For the first time after the Sultanate witnessed a slight fall in number of cases and casualties for some time, the numbers started shooting up as the Ministry of Health asked both citizens and residents to stick to Covid-19 protocols.
The death toll on Monday touched 46, a sharp jump of nearly two deaths per hour, while the total number of casualties rose to 3,013. As many as 2,243 people were newly infected with this deadly virus triggering concerns among health practitioners and common people.
'This is for the first time that we see the cases shoot sharp during the second wave of Covid-19. The variant during this wave is more dangerous than the earlier one. People need to be extra careful. Don't go out unless it's necessary, avoid social gathering and keep your mask intact on your face,' urged the Ministry of Health statement.
The ministry has found lack of social distancing among some people has resulted in a rapid surge in the number of cases in the country.
'The situation is very worrying, and the indicators are serious. The pandemic is spreading more rapidly, and it seems to be even more severe. We expect an increase in numbers in the coming period,' said Dr Faryal Ali Khamis al Lawati, Senior Consultant and Head of Infection Diseases Section - Internal Medicine Department at the Royal Hospital.
Medics continued to urge the public to stay away from each other and help the nation safeguard the lives of everyone.
'This wave is creating havoc, in terms of deaths, complications in lungs and other organs, formation of clots in various organs, affecting younger age groups, as compared to the last wave. This variant is spreading faster and is more dangerous and deadlier. That's why we are witnessing an increase in the death rate, which is making new highs every day,' says Dr Dilip Singhvi, specialist in internal medicine.
'We need to take care and follow all Covid guidelines like masking, social distancing, the most important handwashing. Also, recognising the symptoms is of prime importance to get an early diagnosis and limit the spread,' added Dr Dilip.
'This means the pandemic has reached devastating levels and the need to be more prudent in our dealing with the virus. We need to continue with proper social distancing, hygiene and plan to take vaccination at the very first opportunity,' said Dr Abood Sawafy from Buraimi University.
The total number of cases registered in the Sultanate has risen. In the last 24 hours, as many as 197 patients with Covid-19 were admitted to hospitals across the country, bringing the total number of inpatients to 1,650, including 506 in intensive care units.
However, Sultanate reported 231,718 recoveries at the rate of 87.7 per cent.
