Sultanate marks Day of the Seafarer

MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, along with the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) marked the Day of the Seafarer which falls on June 25 each year.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) designated the 25th of June as the Day of the Seafarer in recognition of the efforts they make in boosting international trade and the challenges they face during their daily voyages in addition to the security threats and the long stay in the sea away from their families to transport the world’s needs of energy, foodstuff and the other commodities we need for our daily life.

The ministry organised a celebration to mark the occasion on the premises of Oman LNG in the Wilayat of Sur under the auspices of Abdulsalam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, Chairman of Oman Investment Authority (OIA).

The celebration shed light on the legislations and regulations issued by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for maritime activities.

A number of excelling seafarers were honoured during the celebration in recognition of the efforts they exerted during their career.

Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said that seafaring is essential to the sea transport industry which is a principal tributary to countries’ economies. The seafarers are affected by the sea conditions and the changing climate and now they are among the most affected category by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the international community has taken all the necessary measures to protect the seafarers from the coronavirus infection.

The Sultanate’s celebration along with the other member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is a testament to the attention accorded to the Omani and expat seafarers working in the Omani and foreign ships in recognition of the efforts they exert, he said.

The minister pointed to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the health and safety of seafarers which directly affected the work system on ships.

The Sultanate and the international organisations have taken suitable health measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the seafarers.
