2,000 Venezuelans leave homes every day

In the face of poverty and violence, more and more Venezuelans are turning their backs on their homeland, even during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Between 1,600 and 2,000 people are leaving Venezuela every day,” the special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Eduardo Stein, told US-Venezuelan broadcaster TVV on Wednesday.

“Most go to Colombia first, but half then move on and look for gainful employment opportunities in countries like Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina.”
