Oman to take part in Arab Athletics in Tunisia

MUSCAT: Oman’s national athletics team will take part in the 22nd Arab Senior Athletics Championship (men and women) which will begin on Wednesday and conclude on Sunday at the Rades Stadium in Tunisia.
The five-day championship will register participation of the Sultanate’s top sprinter Barakat al Harthy and Hussain Hatim in 100 metres sprint while Mazoon al Alawi will compete at the women’s 100 metres.
Oman’s ace long-distance runner Mohammed al Suliemani will join in the semifinals of 1,500 metres run. Oman 4x100 metres relay race team for this Arab athletics event will comprise Barkat al Harthi, Sameer al Riyami, Rashid al Asmi and Mohammed al Saadi.
As many as 400 athletes will take part in this edition of championship representing 19 countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, Oman, Bahrain, Syria, Somalia, Djibouti, Yemen, Palestine, Jordan, Sudan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Algeria, Lebanon, Comoros and the hosts Tunisia.
The 22nd Arab Senior Athletics Championship is an approved athletics event by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). This Arabian meet will be the last chance for the Arab athletes to qualify for the forthcoming 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo which will take place from July 23 to August 8.
Oman’s top athletes, Barakat and Mazoon, completed the long external camp in Turkey and travelled directly to Tunisia.
Other Omani athletes got prepared previously during the domestic gathering in Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex and Sohar Sports Complex prior to the suspension the sporting activities in Oman. Barakat and Mazoon will aim to register the Olympic qualification timing to make it to the Tokyo Games.
Moreover, other athletes will compete to confirm their attendance at the 2020 World Athletics U20 Championships by finding the qualifying marks.
